Painting Nova Scotia: Landscapes from the South Shore
I've lived in Liverpool, Nova Scotia since 2000 and the landscape here never stops giving me something to work with.
The South Shore has a particular quality of light. The way it filters through the pines in the morning, or sits flat and heavy on the water before a storm. The tidal rivers, the weathered shorelines, the beaches that empty out in October. I've been painting these places for over two decades and I'm still finding new things to say about them.
Why Landscape?
Landscape painting is about attention. You have to look carefully and repeatedly at a place before you understand what it's actually doing. I walk a lot, along the coast and through the woods around Queens County, and those walks feed everything I put on canvas. A painting of Sperrys Beach or Voglers Cove isn't just a picture of a place. It's a record of a particular moment of looking.
The Work
My landscapes range from loose and atmospheric to more detailed studies of specific locations. I work primarily in acrylic, and I'm drawn to the moments just before or after the light changes, sunrises, approaching weather, the last hour of an October afternoon. Nova Scotia gives you a lot of those moments if you're paying attention.
